Planned Photoshoot
In my photo shoot I am going to take pictures of the main member of the band which will be placed on the front of the magazine but I am going to have photos of the band together in the contents pages and main artical.
PROPS: for props I am going to have the main member who is the bassist with his bass guitar in his hands as if he is playing it. For the rest of the photos where the band is all together I am going to have them all with their instruments and take the photos while they are playing at a gig.
CLOTHING: I am going to take the photo in black and white so the main member wears isn't to
MODLES: the models for my cover are going to be an amateur rock band called "beyond ordinary".
These are my photos of each member of the band playing their instruments while at a gig. These photos will be put in the contents page of my magazine and the double page spread artical.
This is a photo of the drum player also known as Romney! This photo was taken at a gig with lighting from the venue and I have taken this shot without the flash on and my composition is very straight forward as he is in the centre of the photo with the drums in front of him, I like this as the background colour is very different to the colour of the drums and of Romney so the reader wont be distracted. also the background links to my theme of red!
This is a photo of the main member, the bassist, also known as Robert. This photo was also taken at the gig under the venues lighting and in this picture he is playing the base. The cloths and the colour of bass guitar links very well to the colour theme of black white and red. The composition of this photo is also straight forward as he is the centre of the photograph with his instrument in front of him.
This is a picture of the lead guitarist who is also known as Sam. This photo was taken at the gig also under the venues lighting which is coming from over Sam's head. This photo is also a very simple composition as he is in the very centre of the photo with his guitar in front of him. I am going to crop this photo so the singer in the left of the photo isn't in it as it takes the attention off Sam.
This is a photo of the lead singer also knows as Nat. In this photo the composition is very different from the others as he is in the picture with Sam. I have done this as both Sam and Nat are singing together hence the microphones. This is taken in the gig under the venues lighting which in this shot is from over head.
In this photo there is a very clear shot of Sam, Nat and Robert as they are at th e front of the stage but Romney the drummer is quite far back and so he isn't very visible. This photo has good lighting and composition as there is always someone to look at and there is no negative space.
In this photo their is to many people in front so the band is not very noticeable, because of this I am going to put this in the contents page with a heading to do with the amount of fans even though they are an amateur band.

Feedback
I know you have been off and need to do a lot of catching up, Olivia! You have made a start on this and need to keep working hard. Make sure that you know what is required. You need a post researching into the conventions of rock music - look at some band image and comment on the instruments, colours, clothing, poses, backgrounds etc.... You seem to have provisional posts into most of the other requirements. Given that we need to get to the production phase, why don't you focus your energies this week on the planning activities and try to get your photos taken. You can always fill the rest of your research in over Christmas if need be ?
Try to use the label box at the end of each post to show which category each post fits into - research, planning, production.

Colour
For my magazine I am sticking to about 3 colours more than that for a rock magazine would not suit the genre. The three colours i have chosen to suit the rock theme are black white and red.
For my front cover I am going to have the background white and the magazine name and band name black and all the small headlines red, I have decided this as black writing on to of white is really easy to read and if i have all me small headings red it will add a colour to make it look more exciting.
For my contents page its basically the same as the main band name and the "contents" will be black and the small headings red and the rest of the writing back it will keep the writing east to read ad follow.
For my double page spread with my piece of journalism I am going to do the same with the black writing on a white background as its easy to read and I am going to have all my small headings red to add colour and make them stand out more.
In this front page it has used Black, White and Red just the way I want to it links well to "Rock" as black is a very dark colour and rock is very dark and the red stands for blood which also links well to "rock". You can also see why the act featuring the magazine also link to "rock", this obviously shows that black white and red link to my "rock" genre.
Also on this front cover the colour scheme is black, white and red this links to the cover artist who is in a rock band. This also shows me that this colour scheme will link to rock.

Fonts
To find font that are suitable for my magazine name I have been on Dafont? and looked in the gothic section as it suits my rock genre. I am going to put a selection of chosen fonts into my questionnaire to let the niche market decide which will look better for my magazine.
Name!
I have many ideas on thinking of a name for my magazine and to choose a final I am going to place them in a small survey for my niche market to decide, which will then be recorded and placed in a pie chart or results table which will be placed onto this post.
The names i have come up with to add into my audience questionnaire are:
Riff!
Beat!
Undiscovered!
and Amateur Rocker!
I have chosen Riff for one of my possible names as it is a repeated phrase, frequently played over changing chords or harmonies or used in a background solo improvisation : a brilliant guitar riff.
I have also chosen Beat as it is a sound that is in all types of music and it links to music and my magazine is based on music.
I have chosen Undiscovered as a name as the acts featuring in my magazine are an undiscovered and unsigned band.
For my final possible name I have chosen Amateur Rocker i have chosen this as it links to the amateur and undiscovered bands in which my magazine is covering and the Rocker show that my magazine is in the "rock" genre.

Outlined Equipment and technologies
When it comes to my photo shoot I am going to use my own digital SLR camera and my tripod so the photo is level and so I can experiment with my own camera shots. Once I have taken the photos I am going to bring them into college so I can upload the pictures up onto a mac computer in which I can use "photoshop" and "indesign" to edit them and produce them into the pages of my magazine.

Media theories on target audiences.
When looking at media theory's such as "GRASS" this will help me look deeper into my target audience:
"G" stands for gender and when looking at my magazine I feel it will appeal to both male and female, as everyone can listen to certain music and its not effected my gender.
"R" stands for race, i think any race can read my magazine as race cant possibly stop someone from liking a rock music magazine. I think if it came to religion atheists will me most interested as some rock music is not very religious and certain religious people may not approve of the music genre.
"A" stands for age and my magazine is aimed at people between the age of around thirteen to early twenty's but i think my magazine might still appeal to people that are slightly older such as adults in their thirty's.
The "SS" stands for "S"ocio-economic "S"tatus which is effected my wealth and jobs as if you are in the A group you are known as the upper class who are business professionals, group B is the middle class who work in middle management, group C1 is lower middle class who work in trades and supervisory jobs, group C2 who are skilled middle class who are known as blue collar workers, group D which is the lower working class who are manual workers and finally group E which is subsidence who are pensioners and the unemployed. My magazine is looking at costing around one pound twenty and its going to be a weekly magazine, because of this i think my magazine can be aimed at all groups except the unemployed, as they wont get an income so they wont be able to afford it and it also wont sell to the pensioners unless they are still into rock music.
Another media theory is Psychographic profiling which consists of Mainstreamer's, Aspirer's, Succeeder's and Reformers, when looking at my magazine i think it will fit into the reformers group the most as they arn't interested in wealth and expensive things they just like to be normal and listen to music.

Target audience
My target audience is based on a niche market for people who like to read and listen to rock music. I have chosen this target audience as its quite a big niche and lots of people are interested in rock magazines as they are pretty popular. I also know a rock band who i can cover in my front page and article. I am going to create a questionnaire in which i can edit my magazine from the answers to suit the readers views on how my magazine should be. I feel my magazine will appeal to people around the age of thirteen to early twenty's and it will appeal to both male and female. My magazine can be read by any race but mostly atheists as they don't have a religion or any specific beliefs that stop them from listening to rock music.
Band images.
For my front cover I am going to have a picture of a band that includes four members, this means I have to arange the band in a way that shows the main member such as the lead guitarist and vocal singer. I am going to have them stood in a V formation with the lead (singer) in the front and the rest behind him in order of band importance and popularity to the readers and in which I think will looks best to sell the magazine.
On this magazine cover the main member of the band and the person most popular with the public is at the front as it is more recognisable to the reader and also it sells more as the fans always love the main figure. The formation of the band is mainly showing the main member but is also showing everyone else in the band very well as they need to be shown too. This has inspired me as it gives great eyes contact to the viewer and it pulls them in to the eyes of the band. Also it shows all the band members pretty equally.

Journalistic style and structure
For my journalism double page spread I am going to write an interview in which I will interview the band and publish it into the magazine. The style of my journalism is going to be very relaxed but detailed at the same time as I am going to publish exactly what the band say. I am going to write in colums and place odd questions into the text so it weaves in to the journalism.
The odd questions I am going to add into my journalism are questions like these:
1) What does it feel like to be on stage performing?
2) Do you enjoy being together as a band?
3) What made you become a band?
4) Where do you perform?
5) Whats your normal weekend?
6) Where do you see yourself in a few years?
These questions are a mixture of relaxed questions about average life/days and career questions.
I am decideing to do this as its very relaxed and easy to folow and read and it looks alot more interesting and fun.
To make the double page spread more interesting I am going to edit some special, interesting quotes and stretch them to make them bigger and a more bold colour so they stand out, the colour i am thinking of is red as it stands out from black and white and it links to my colour theme.

Research Feedback
Olivia - you have some basic research here but need to cover more topics - use your checklist to work through the gaps that you have. You could also use my comments on each post to improve the work you have done further. You need to complete and upload your prelim task as a matter of urgency.

Conventions of Music Magazines
Front pages:
In this front page the magazine is featuring "You me at six" this is a very well knows rock band who also share a niche market of "Rock". when looking at the colour scheme they use a limited amount of bright colours on a plain background, this is to make the headlines stand out and look more interesting, also the heading is behind the artists heads, this shows that the artists are more important than the name of the magazine. Another main feature in the magazine is the artists name which is "you me at six" which goes straight across the magazine page to show the band is more inportant.
In this magazine featuring Metallica cover the artist also overlaps the name of the magazine to show the artist is more important., also the fact that the artist has a guitar with him in the photo shows he obviously plays it. The magazine has METALLICA right across the cover show the main attraction is the band. In this cover they use limited colours which are black white and gold which resembles classic rock.
In this contents page Kerrang use a list style of contents and use black white and yellow. They layout the page by having photos with sub headings in the bottom left hand corner. This automatically makes our eyes read the page from left to right to make you read the more important headings first.
In this contents page Kerrang use the same techniques as they have big photos with headings to stand out before your eyes drift to the list style of contents. In the pictures there are bigger pictures of the more important artists.
In this Kerrang double page spread the colour scheme changes slightly as the black red and white is still there a slightly blue picture is added. The layout of this pages is very easy to follow as your eyes flows from the left picture to the wrighting which is in boxes and in a easy bullet point style which makes it more fun to read.
In this double page spread the all red background is more exciting and unique and the black cross that goes across the page keeps a "Rock" theme, also the picture of the artist shows who the journalism piece is about and the form of wrighting keeps it easy to read.

USP
A USP is a unique selling point that makes your product different and more "unique" than others.
Most music magazines have front covers that have professional and famously knows musicians. To make my magazine "unique" I am going use an amateur rock band who have a different look about them, and they are undiscovered/ unsigned so they aren't heard of.
I am going to create a piece of journalism which will be an interview with the band and I will ask a mixture of questions that look at their career and their normal everyday life, this looks into the life's of undiscovered musicians which brings a whole new look to music magazines.
Because my magazine is aimed at a niche market "rock" I am going to make my magazine "unique" by using three colours which are red, black and white but I am going to use the colour red in more things as it shows suits "Rock" more and not many other magazines use a lot of red also as well as the colour I am going to find a very unique font in which I will .
In side the contents of my magazine I am going to list all the coming up concerts of unsigned and undiscovered bands and musicians that are included in the niche market "rock". This brings a new take on undiscovered talents.

Prelim task
Here is my prelim magazine cover:
Here is my contents page mock-up
Here is my contents page mock-up
Here is my prelim task which I created as a practice to get used to indesign and photoshop. When looking at the outcome I think I have made a good start but I think it looks to plain with a white background, also I would have changed the name to SMC MUSIC MAGAZINE a it is supposed to be a college magazine. If i had a chance to do this again I would spend more think cutting out the person on the cover as it looks like its been quickly done and not professional enough. I think the black and white writing looks good on top of the coloured panels so I am going to look at using that in my actual magazine.
Over all I think this is a success for my first attempt of a magazine cover.

Initial Ideas
My initial ideas for this project are thats I am going to base my magazine on "Rock" and i love rock music and I know an amateur rock band in which i can use for my my main focus.
I am going to have a colour scheme of black and white and red as it is very simple but sticks to the rock genre.
For my front cover i am going to have a picture of a band of four with the main person on the in the centre at the front and with the other 3 stood behind so they're in a V shape.
I am going to have the name of the band in front of their picture with the name of the magazine behind their heads to show the band are more important than the magazine.
My audience is a niche market which looks at rock music fans.

Introduction
I'm Olivia Rankine and I am studying AS media.
For my project I am going to make a print music magazine which consists of a front cover, a contents page and a double page spread which will be a piece of journalism.
